Ludlow Griscom, born in 1890, was a museum man but he lacked the PhD necessary to rise to the top position at an institution and he has the offending habit, to many other museum men, of caring about identifying birds in the field without the use of gun. Griscom was a collector, especially on trips to tropical America where he collected and named new species to science. But, he also promoted the notion that birds could be identified based on observable characters rather than needing to shoot them for identification.”
