He died in 1938 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, as the famed North American Indian conservationist Grey Owl. On emigrating to Canada, he spent his early years as a trapper in northern Ontario and Quebec. By his mid-thirties he had become a protector of wildlife, particularly beaver, and a popular author and lecturer. An enormously successful impostor, he played the part of an Indian with a dramatic flourish. Wearing his trademark costume, he was granted an audience with King George VI, to whom he preached his message of conservation. He lived in a cabin in Prince Albert National Park that was specially constructed so his beavers could build their lodge in it.”
